Abstract

THIS paper aims at giving the most important results of modern German research upon the motion of incompressible fluids. Before dealing with the latest developments, I have thought it advisable to give a short account of the older researches upon which the present work is based. It is hoped that this résumé will give a fairly complete survey of the methods that have led to the present insight into the hydrodynamical mechanism.

Abstract

THE graphical methods of one‐dimensional gas dynamics are reviewed and developed to obtain a complete representation of adiabatic flow of perfect gases in ducts of constant cross‐section. The dimensionless charts, from which the variation of the state of the gas along the duct axis can be determined, are analysed and the methods of their construction given. The form of the charts depends only on the value of the ratio of specific heats.

Abstract

A PROMINENT personality in the British aircraft industry recently, we are told, referred to the “unimpeachable accuracy” of this paper. This is, of course, a great compliment, particularly in view of the source from which it came, and we only wish it were deserved. Unfortunately, it is not. We would be only too happy to be able to write, following the precedent of a popular English weekly, “If you see it in AIRCRAFT ENGINEERING it is so.” But the blunt truth is that, through no fault of our own, it is not possible for us to guarantee the accuracy of everything that appears in our pages. This may possibly be a disappointment to some of the less sophisticated of our readers, but it will come as no surprise to those with the most inside knowledge of the aeronautical world. In fact, if we may so put it without offence, we should have supposed that the individual who was kind enough to make the remark quoted would himself have known that it was not—that, indeed, it could not be—true.

Abstract

FLYING is still so novel a feature of modern life that it has not yet passed the stage when the generality of people look upon it as a marvel. It is still to them a wonderful tiling that the aeroplane should fly at all. In spite of all that has been written in a propagandist spirit, that amorphous person the “man in the street” never thinks of the aeroplane as a possible vehicle in which he may be transported from one place to another. Flying is an adventure to him, and he infinitely prefers solid safety and comfort to adventure. But although that spirit remains at present, those of us who are in close touch with progress know that its end is in sight and that the time is approaching when to take a seat in a flying machine may no longer be a matter for trepidation and prayer.

To provide a review of the interface between e‐learning, digital libraries and learning content.

Abstract

Purpose

To provide a review of the interface between e‐learning, digital libraries and learning content.

Design/methodology/approach

A review of current thinking and activity surrounding the delivery of content in e‐learning systems. Some analysis of information concerns and commentary on future scenarios.

Findings

The paper investigates the reality of information management in e‐learning practice. It looks at types of information extant in systems and analyses links between (virtual) learning environments, digital libraries and web content. It examines the potential for reuse of material in a university context and the supporting standards and technology.

Research limitations/implications

Looks particularly at UK and US context but also has an international dimension.

Originality/value

It brings together a disposable set of issues to provide a discursive but practical summary of the topic. It will be of value to an information manager faced with managing content in a learning organisation.

Abstract

This paper examines and challenges the embodiment of Japanese decision making in the term ‘ringi.’ A model for attaining decision consensus is developed from existing literature and validated through interviews with Japanese managers. The model incorporates interpersonal process mechanisms into a series of decision stages, from which consensus evolves. The model shows the decision process to be iterative, reverting to previous stages, until issues blocking consensus are resolved. From the behavior patterns identified in the Japanese decision process model, propositions are offered on the implications of western decision theories in Japanese organizations. The adoption of Japanese decision making into western organizations may be limited to the newer team‐based organizations.

Abstract

Academic libraries are undergoing a paradigm shift of service, due to various changes in their environment and internally. The maker culture is one of these factors and implies challenges regarding space, infrastructures, and services organization. This situation extends to research support services, in which the users have a particular informative behavior. This chapter aims to analyze whether the academic library has created research support services adapted to the era of maker culture. It examines how research is a key factor in the higher education system to contextualize the importance of research support services in academic libraries. How the researcher accepts or not the role of academic libraries in the process of production and communication of research is studied. As critical elements of the process, we examine part of researcher information behavior in the era of maker culture and the relationship of these users with librarians.
